International Trainers' Notes
Notes for trainers The authors are experienced print and broadcast journalists, who have worked as trainers for the IFJ, PressWise and UN agencies in over 20 countries throughout Africa, Asia and Europe. Their NOTES FOR TRAINERS should be treated as GUIDANCE not instructions.
Preparation PressWise recommends that participants are given a SUMMARY (supplied as part of the module documentation) of what to expect in ADVANCE of the course - so they know what to expect. A full course programme should be made available at the start of the training day.
Background material Background material has been compiled to provide trainers with authoritative quotes and suggestions about how to deliver the modules. They are drawn from research conducted by PressWise during 2001 & 2002 and will need to be supplemented with more recent material, and trainers should draw upon their own experience, cuttings and storylines.
'Chatham House Rules' Since the training session will touch on potentially distressing experiences it is preferable to conduct the training under 'Chatham House Rules'. This convention allows participants to use the information they receive but may not reveal the identity of those quoted or the circumstances under which the information was received. It means that participants are free to express their views without fear of being quoted unless their express consent has been obtained after the event.
Guest speakers Trainers may wish to invite a suicide survivor, a family member, or a representative from a suicide prevention or mental health support group to take part in one or more of the sessions, in particular to express their views (which may range from gratitude to dismay) about coverage of an actual suicide with which they have been connected.
Such guest speakers or participants should see the training material in advance and be made aware of who they will be addressing and why. They should be asked to make clear whether or not their contribution is to be non-attributable and 'off the record'.
