Monitors existing access rights and provide practical guides to help people use them; has promoted a series of private members' bills in Parliament, several of which have become law, providing new rights of access to personal files and other information. Provides training to public authorities preparing to implement the Act and will be providing training courses for users shortly before the access rights come into force. A small non-profit organisation, not affiliated to a political party and supported by some 90 national organisations. Main sources of funding: Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust, Consumers' Association, UNISON, the Allen Lane Foundation, the Polden-Puckham Charitable Foundation.

Runs conferences & partnership events, lobbies parliament and publishes books. A membership organisation working closely with media unions. Has always worked closely with PressWise which grew out of some of its campaigns on right to reply.

Relaunched in 1995 to promote public service television, choice and quality for all viewers in the UK; to ensure that efforts are made in an era of rapid technical advance, to match the new breadth of choice with a true breadth of quality; to ensure that public service television is adequately funded; promote public debate about television; and to persuade legislators towards policies which are creative and imaginative and which treat the viewers as partners in the enterprise of television rather than sources of revenue.

CMCR continues to support and encourage a variety of research interests in and approaches to the study of the media, communications and related topics. The academic Staff include sociologists, political scientists, communications and cultural theorists, experts in language and linguistics, and researchers in international film and cinema who undertake research projects to contribute to public debate and inform policy on the media and communication issues, and serve as consultants and advisers to international agencies, Government departments and to media, research and higher educational institutions overseas. Recent studies have covered the media and the British criminal justice system, ethnic minorities and television, the press and parliament, children's television, the media and sport, television and food choice, radio drama and health education, the international news agencies, east European film, and the international popular music industry. Recent CMCR research has been supported by UNESCO, the ESRC, the UK Government Home Office, EU, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fishers and Food (MAFF), the Leverhulme Trust, the Broadcasting Standards Commission, Channel 4 & the World-Wide Fund for Nature.
