Conference: How can we ensure a free and responsible press?

13 May 2013 – The Leveson Inquiry in the UK and the recent report of the European Commission’s High-Level Group on Media Freedom and Pluralism have stirred a heated debate among industry representatives, media professionals and policy-makers across Europe: Do we need sharper sanctions to make media self-regulation more effective? The EU- funded research project Media Accountability and Transparency in Europe (MediaAcT) provides new insights to the current debate at a conference on June 6 in Brussels.

A distinguished team of academics from across Europe has conducted a representative survey among 1,682 journalists in 14 European and Arab countries as part othe MediaAcT project. On June 6 in Brussels, we will present our key results for the first time – as well as a ‘Media Accountability Index’ and the project’s policy recommendations.

We are delighted that The Honourable Prof. Vike-Freiberga, Chairwoman of the High-Level Group, will open the conference with a keynote speech. Two panels will bring together leading international industry representatives, policy-makers, and researchers to discuss the future of media self-regulation in Europe.
